Bridging Filipino Creativity to the Global Stage: SoFA Design Institute Partners with IE University
In today’s rapidly evolving creative landscape, design education is no longer confined within national borders. For aspiring designers, exposure to global perspectives, cross-cultural collaboration, and international opportunities has become an essential part of professional growth. Recognizing this shift, SoFA Design Institute has taken a significant step forward by launching a new academic partnership with IE University in Spain—an initiative that opens new global pathways for Filipino creatives.
For over a decade, SoFA Design Institute has built a reputation as one of the Philippines’ leading centers for creative education. The institution has consistently focused on nurturing talent while equipping students with the technical skills, critical thinking, and creative confidence needed to thrive in the design industry both locally and abroad.
This commitment to global engagement came to life on March 11 with the official launch of the SoFA–IE University partnership. The collaboration was unveiled during a curated event held at SoFA’s campus at The Proscenium Retail Row—an intimate gathering that brought together educators, creatives, and design enthusiasts for a morning centered on ideas, creativity beyond borders, and the evolving future of design education.
Creativity Without Borders
One of the highlights of the launch was a Creative Conversation featuring Flabelus, a Spanish footwear brand known for reinterpreting traditional craftsmanship through contemporary design and storytelling. Leading the discussion was Pilar Oraa, the brand’s International PR and Communications Director, who shared insights into how heritage craftsmanship can be transformed through modern creative expression.
The conversation provided attendees with a glimpse into how global design brands combine storytelling, culture, and innovation to create products that resonate across markets.
Expanding Opportunities for Students
The partnership also introduced new educational pathways for SoFA students. Andrea Pagani, Senior Associate Director of Business Development for Undergraduates in Southeast Asia and Oceania at IE University, presented the opportunities available through the collaboration.
Joining the discussion were SoFA co-founders Loralee Baron-Soong and Amina Aranaz-Alunan, along with Mads Constantino, Director for Academic Affairs at SoFA Design Institute, who hosted the morning session.
Through the partnership, SoFA students will gain access to a range of international learning experiences, including:
-
- Global internship opportunities
- Immersive Spanish design tours
- Exchange programs
- Summer school programs with IE University
These initiatives aim to expose students to diverse design environments while allowing them to participate in short-term international creative experiences that broaden both perspective and practice.
A Global Mindset for Filipino Designers
For many aspiring creatives in the Philippines, international exposure can be transformative. Today’s design industry increasingly values professionals who can navigate different cultural contexts while contributing original perspectives to global conversations.
By connecting with institutions such as IE University and collaborating with brands like Flabelus, SoFA Design Institute is actively creating pathways for Filipino designers to engage with international networks.
What began as a specialized design school in Manila is gradually evolving into a dynamic platform where local creativity meets global opportunity. Through partnerships like this, Filipino talent is being positioned to contribute meaningfully to the global design community.
As design education continues to expand beyond borders, initiatives like the SoFA–IE University collaboration demonstrate how institutions can empower students to explore new creative traditions, participate in international dialogue, and cultivate a truly global mindset.

Erceflora Strengthens Its Commitment to Gut Health Education This Batang Matatag Day 2026
For many Filipino students, school is not only a place for learning—it is also where habits that shape lifelong health begin. Yet across the Philippines, gaps in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities continue to put children at risk of preventable illnesses. Among these, diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of sickness and hospitalization nationwide.

Health studies reveal that nearly 80% of diarrhea-related deaths are linked to poor access to safe water and sanitation, highlighting a persistent challenge faced by many communities. Unsafe water sources and limited hygiene facilities in schools can easily expose children to infections that could otherwise be prevented through proper hygiene and improved sanitation systems.
Recognizing the urgency of this issue, Erceflora launched Batang Matatag, a flagship advocacy program that aims to address child mortality from diarrhea—not only through treatment but through prevention. The initiative focuses on strengthening awareness about gut health, promoting hygiene education, and supporting better sanitation practices in schools and communities.
From Treatment to Prevention
Since its launch in 2022, Batang Matatag has reached over 200,000 children across various regions in the Philippines, providing education and resources that empower students and families to adopt healthier habits.
“Batang Matatag reflects our commitment to protecting children not just through treatment, but through prevention—empowering communities with the knowledge, habits, and support to build strong foundations for lifelong health and resilience,” said Rica Mateo, Brand Lead for Erceflora in the ASEA Zone.
She emphasized that meaningful change begins with everyday choices—whether at home, in schools, or within the broader community.
Building Healthier School Environments
Beyond awareness campaigns, the initiative has also focused on improving school environments where children spend most of their day.
Through the program, WASH facilities have been constructed and refrigerated drinking fountains have been donated to more than 104 schools across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Luzon, and Rizal. These upgrades provide students with safer access to drinking water and sanitation, helping reinforce healthy daily habits.
The impact is already measurable. Partner schools in Rizal have reported a 20% decline in diarrhea cases, while schools in BARMM have seen reductions of up to 50% during the School Year 2024–2025.
Looking ahead, Erceflora aims to reach 150,000 students and healthcare providers in 2026, expanding the program further across Rizal and Metro Manila to strengthen its mission of building resilient children through improved gut health and hygiene practices.
A Shared Responsibility
For Erceflora and its partners, the vision behind Batang Matatag extends far beyond any single organization.

“Being Batang Matatag starts with taking care of one’s body, but this mission goes far beyond any single product or organization,” said Emma Valette, Country Head of Opella Healthcare Philippines. “We call on parents, educators, and partners to work with us—because building stronger, healthier children is a shared responsibility we cannot achieve alone.”
Batang Matatag Day 2026: Expanding the Mission
Five years into the initiative, Batang Matatag continues to grow. Batang Matatag Day 2026 marks a renewed push to expand the program’s reach and deepen its impact across more communities.
The celebration was highlighted by a visit from Opella Healthcare’s global leadership, including Julie Van-Ongevalle, Alberto Hernandez, and Matthieu Brucker. The initiative also welcomed partnerships with seven new schools, including Maharlika Integrated School.
During the event, around 200 Grade 2 and Grade 3 students participated in interactive activities such as the Batang Matatag Bus sessions, where they learned proper handwashing and other hygiene practices designed to build healthy habits early in life.

“For the past five years, in partnership with the Manila Water Foundation, schools, and communities across BARMM and Luzon, we’ve been helping children look after their health—especially their gut health, which supports 70% of immunity,” said Carol‑Ann Stewart. “We want more kids across the Philippines to know this and be truly Batang Matatag.”
Real Impact in the Community
For schools that have benefited from the program, the improvements have already made a meaningful difference.
“Batang Matatag’s services and contributions came at a crucial time, enabling us to provide improved drinking and washing facilities that will have a lasting impact on our school community,” shared Dr. Romeo O. Olalo. “More than the resources, the commitment has brought joy to our learners and strengthened an environment where they can thrive, grow, and build healthier habits for the future.”
As the program continues to expand, the vision remains clear: to create a generation of Batang Matatag—strong, resilient children equipped with the knowledge and habits needed for lifelong health.

It’s not just dinner.
It’s a memory waiting to happen.
Not Just a Festival — A Front-Row Seat to the Future of Flight
Beyond the spectacle, the Fiesta is also where aviation fans get their fix.
The Aviation Seminar gives students, hobbyists, and professionals insider access to the latest in flying, safety, and innovation. It’s a chance to learn from industry experts and maybe even spark that childhood dream of taking to the skies yourself.

Meanwhile, cutting-edge attractions like the Kyxz Hoverbike demo offer a glimpse into what the future of personal flight might look like.
Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.
Meet the Giants of the Sky
One of the most delightful parts of the Fiesta? The balloons themselves.
This year brings a parade of whimsical, larger-than-life characters making their Philippine debut—like Finley the Turtle, Tuca the Toucan, colorful Macaws, and even a Walrus floating overhead.

Fan favorites return too: from a flying Yoda to princesses, dragons, witches, and hearts drifting lazily across the sky.
Kids squeal. Adults turn into kids again. Everyone reaches for their phones.
It’s pure joy, floating 1,000 feet up.
Thrills Above and Below
If slow, dreamy balloon rides aren’t enough adrenaline for you, don’t worry.
The skies will also host:
- Paragliding accuracy competitions
- High-speed FPV drone races
- Drone soccer battles
Down on the ground, expect roaring engines, drifting cars, bustling markets, and live performances that turn the evenings into a full-on celebration.
